OUR CLASSES & PROGRESSION

OUR APPROACH TO ACTOR TRAINING

At The Actors Workshop Nottingham, we aim to provide high-quality, industry-focused acting training in a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment.

Whether you're completely new to acting, looking to develop your existing skills or already working professionally, our workshops are designed to help you grow as a performer.

Our teaching draws upon professional acting techniques and industry practices, with an emphasis on developing confidence, creativity, performance skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other actors.

A FLEXIBLE, ROLLING CURRICULUM

Unlike traditional drama schools or fixed-term acting courses, The Actors Workshop operates on a rolling membership basis, allowing members to join throughout the year.

Our curriculum is deliberately flexible rather than following a rigid weekly syllabus.

Sessions may explore a variety of disciplines, including:

- Acting for television and film
- Script analysis and character development
- Improvisation and ensemble work
- Acting techniques and performance exercises
- Audition preparation and self-taping
- Scene study and rehearsal
- Industry-focused training and professional development

The areas we explore will vary throughout the year, depending on the needs of our members, the development of existing projects and opportunities arising within the industry.

Certain exercises, techniques and areas of study will naturally be revisited periodically, allowing both new and existing members to develop their skills through continued practice.

There is no fixed timetable for completing particular areas of training, and members joining at different times may experience different elements of our curriculum.

CLASS PLACEMENT

We offer classes catering to different levels of acting experience and development.

When joining The Actors Workshop, members are placed in a group that we believe is appropriate for their current experience, confidence and training needs.

Placement takes into account a variety of factors, including previous acting experience, current ability, individual development and the dynamics of our existing groups.

We recognise that every actor is different and that members will develop at different rates.

Our aim is always to provide a learning environment in which individuals can participate meaningfully, develop their abilities and benefit from working alongside others.

PROGRESSION BETWEEN GROUPS

Progression at The Actors Workshop is based on individual development and readiness rather than length of membership.

Attending classes regularly or having previous acting experience does not automatically guarantee progression into a more experienced group.

When considering whether a member is ready to progress, our tutors assess a range of factors, including:

- Acting technique and performance ability
- Confidence and understanding of the work
- Ability to understand and respond to direction
- Adaptability and willingness to explore different approaches
- Collaboration and contribution to ensemble work
- Readiness for the demands of a more experienced group

These considerations form part of our tutors' ongoing professional observations during regular classes, rather than a formal examination or appraisal process.

Decisions regarding progression are made at the discretion of The Actors Workshop teaching team, taking into account the individual member's development, the suitability of the receiving group and available places.

Progression is not guaranteed, and some members may remain within the same group for an extended period.

This does not prevent them from continuing to develop their skills or enjoying the benefits of ongoing training.

INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT

We understand that members attend The Actors Workshop for many different reasons.

Some aspire to become professional actors, while others attend to develop their confidence, creativity, communication skills or simply because they enjoy acting.

We welcome these different ambitions and recognise that success and progression will mean different things to different people.

Our commitment is to provide professional-quality training while recognising individual abilities, circumstances and learning needs.

We encourage members to speak with their tutor if they have questions about their development, class placement or the areas they could focus on improving.

Where appropriate, we will also consider reasonable adjustments to support members' participation and learning.

OUR COMMITMENT

Having provided acting training in Nottingham since 2010, The Actors Workshop has developed an approach that combines professional standards with the flexibility and accessibility of an ongoing workshop environment.

We believe that good acting training should challenge, encourage and inspire performers while recognising that every actor's journey is different.

Our priority is to ensure that members receive training appropriate to their current stage of development, within a positive and productive learning environment.
